Rocking in a rocking-chair is very close to the heart of the islanders of Hiiumaa. Jokingly said, they cannot do without the rolling of waves even on dry land. There is a rocking-chair in almost every rural family, but also in apartment buildings. In some families a rocking-chair is the place where most of the communication happens, but in other families it can be a place for being alone with your thoughts. In earlier times, men who had returned from the sea sat in a rocking-chair to tell their travel stories. It is a good place to watch TV, to knit a sock or to think. Mothers like to feed their infants there and to rock them to sleep.
A special feature of Hiiumaa is a broad-seated rocking chair for two or three people. A number of children can enjoy rocking together or two adults can have a peaceful conversation. Nowadays new rocking-chairs characteristic of Hiiumaa are seldom made. In earlier times many men had the necessary knowledge and skills to make the rocking-chairs from scratch, although it required well-developed carpentry skills.
